Do Gamers Know?: Fun Facts in Video Games

Hello there, this is Motion Ape from Motion Game, and today I am going to give you some Fun Facts that you (might) have not hear about this. Various games, platforms, and industries have their own fun fact. Let's see them one by one:


  • US computer and video game software sales grew six percent in 2006 to $7.4 billion – almost tripling industry software sales since 1996.
  • Sixty-nine percent of American heads of households play computer and video games.
  • The average game player is 33 years old and has been playing games for 12 years.
  • The average age of the most frequent game buyer is 40 years old. In 2006, 93 percent of computer game buyers and 83 percent of console game buyers were over the age of 18.
  • Eighty-five percent of all games sold in 2005 were rated "E" for Everyone, "T" for Teen, or "E10+" for Everyone 10+. For more information on ratings, please see www.esrb.org.
  • Eighty-seven percent of game players under the age of 18 report that they get their parents’ permission when renting or buying games, and 89 percent say their parents are present when they buy games.
  • Thirty-five percent of American parents say they play computer and video games. Further, 80 percent of gamer parents say they play video games with their kids. Sixty-six percent feel that playing games has brought their families closer together.
  • Thirty-eight percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (30%) than boys age 17 or younger (23%).
  • In 2005, 25 percent of Americans over the age of 50 played video games, an increase from nine percent in 1999.
  • Forty-four percent of game players say they play games online one or more hours per week.

  • It’s not just your kids playing video games. Two games that stood out from the Public Health sector: “Catch the Sperm” and “Super Shagland”.

  • Pac-Man was designed by Toru Iwatani for appealing to women, because Pac-Man is always eating like women do.
  • Microsoft’s Xbox was the first video game system to provide full support fot HDTV.
  • Atari Lynx was the first color portable video game system , introduced in 1989 and priced at $149.
  • Shigeru Miyamoto drew famous game character MARIO, Mario wears a cap because Shigeru Miyamoto found drawing hairs difficult and also the moustache which was easier to see in video game screen resolution back then.
  • Mario and his younger brother Luigi are known as the “Mario Brothers” which makes Mario’s last name as Mario.
  • The largest gathering of people wearing game characters costumes was in London on May 23, 2009. There were 376 participants.
  • After 9/11 world trade center attack, Darkel, a homles character that rigs building with explosive, was removed from Grand Theft Auto 3.
  • Xbox’s original name was DirectXbox, it was created by DirectX developers.
  • All of the voices in arcade hacking-and-slashing game Golden Axe were performed byAmerican prisoners on death row.
  • U.S. computer and video game software sales grew 22.9 percent in 2008 to $11.7 billion – more than quadrupling industry software sales since 1996.

  • The Sega Dreamcast was the first console to implement online play over a phone line, calling the system Sega Net.

  • The Atari Pong video game console was the No. 1 selling item for the holiday season in 1975.
  • The first console to have games available in the form of add-on cartridges was the FairchildChannel F console, introduced in August 1976.
  • The PlayStation 2 was the first video game system to use DVD technology.
  • On the original Magnavox Odyssey, players had to keep score themselves because the machine couldn't.
  • The Nintendo GameCube's proprietary disc held 1.5 gigabytes of data -- 190 times more than what an N64 game cartridge could hold.
  • On the market from 1991 till 2004, the SNK NeoGeo AES has tied the Atari 2600 (1977-1990) as the longest supported gaming console in history.
  • The Sega Genesis featured a version of the same Motorola processor that powered the original Apple Macintosh computer.
  • Mattel's Intellivison system, introduced in 1980, featured an add-on called "PlayCable," which delivered games by cable TV.
  • Nintendo's Game Boy was the most successful game system ever, with more than 100 million units sold worldwide.
  • The word atari comes from the ancient Japanese game of Go and means "you are about to be engulfed." Technically, it is the word used by a player to inform his opponent that he is about to lose, similar to "check" in chess.
  • In the 1980s, a service called Gameline allowed users to download games to the Atari 2600 over regular phone lines. It was not a success, but did form part of the foundation for America Online, the world's largest Internet service provider.
  • The first color portable video game system was the Atari Lynx, introduced in 1989 and priced at $149.
  • Introduced in 1993, the 3DO was the first video game system to be based entirely on CDtechnology.
  • The Sony PlayStation was originally intended as a CD add-on to the Super Nintendo. When licensing problems and other issues arose, Sony decided to develop the PlayStation as a machine of its own.
